Trump’s Committed Base
I struggle with understanding how people continue to support Donald Trump given the strong evidence of corruption in his administration. Despite scandal after scandal, 40 percent of the country supports him. As I believe he lacks morals, I was surprised, most recently, by the tornado victims in Alabama asking him to sign their Bibles. Perhaps people wanted the President’s signature and they only had a Bible to sign because they lost everything else. However, it seemed in most cases people were specifically asking Trump to sign their Bible over other options. I do not understand why they would ask someone who does not embrace Christian principles, as demonstrated by his behavior, to sign their Bible. I have pondered what appears to be a contradiction and have a few possible explanations for this unshakable support for Trump. Some of my explanations are a bit radical, but still viable.
What is Driving the Unwavering Support
Even if the tornado victims agree with Trump politically, why doesn’t his personal behavior give them pause? It would seem to me that having the President sign your Bible is a highly personal spiritual gesture. Yet, Trump shows no interest in religion or spirituality of any sort He has lived a life in which he has repeated ignored Christian teachings. But most of all, his behavior is the antithesis of Christian principles.
Something very odd is occurring between the Christian Right and Donald Trump. Conservative Christians appear to be willing to look the other way when it comes to the long list of Trump’s indiscretions. Perhaps they are trading getting a conservative supreme court that will overturn Roe vs Wade to look the other way on corruption. A similar explanation is that they see him as championing their social issues which is what matters to them so they ignore his personal behavior.
Another theory to explain this odd alliance is that conservative Christians are used to committing themselves fully and accept the concept of “have faith” as an explanation for contradictory evidence. The answer to questions such as “why do bad things (tornadoes) happened to good people” is “it is all part of God’s plan”or “have faith”. It enables them to hold tight to their religion after a horrific disaster. Rather than being angry at God, they thank him for sparing them. Perhaps it is this ability to continue to believe when logic says otherwise that is at both the foundation of their faith and their commitment to Donald Trump.
My brother suggested I might like this blog. He was totally right. This post actually made my day. You can not imagine simply how much time I had spent for this info! Thanks!
